|Iran rejects preconditions to participate in Geneva meeting on Syria||
TEHRAN – Iran announced on Tuesday that it would not accept any precondition for participation in the long-delayed peace conference on Syria in Geneva.
“If our presence (in the Geneva conference) helps reach a solution, it is unacceptable to put conditions on inviting the Islamic Republic of Iran, and we will not accept any condition,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said.
Iran has reiterated that political agreement based on dialogue between Syrian groups is the only way out of the Syrian crisis and that Tehran is ready to help this diplomatic process, she added.
The United States said on Monday it would be more open to Iran taking part in “Geneva II” conference if Iran publicly backed a 2012 statement calling for a transitional government in Syria, Reuters reported.
The June 30, 2012, “Geneva Communique” sought to chart a path to a diplomatic resolution of the Syrian conflict.
