|‘Europeans have realized that Geneva meeting can help restore security in Syria’||
TEHRAN – The Iranian parliament speaker said on Tuesday that many countries have realized that there is no military solution to the Syrian crisis and European countries have also found out that a proposed meeting on Syria in Geneva can be a catalyst to peace in the country.
The meeting on Syria known as “Geneva II” is planned to be held in mid-November.
“European countries have also found out that the Geneva II can be important for this issue,” Ali Larijani said in a meeting with the Iraqi parliamentary delegation in Geneva, Switzerland.
Iran, Iraq back political solution to Syria war
Larijani also said, “We are completely aware of the views of the Iraqi friends about Syria” and support political solution to the conflict “even though certain countries do not accept this and think that this crisis can be resolved only through a military solution.”
The top Iranian legislator added that consultation between Tehran and Baghdad for settling the civil war in Syria is very important.
For his part, Yusef al-Rekabi, the head of the Iraqi parliamentary delegation, said all the political factions in Iraq have reached a consensus about the Syrian issue.
“Now the Iraqis believe that the crisis in Syria and its consequences will not be limited to the country (Syria) and its people and it will spread to other countries,” Rekabi stated.
“Iraq has been seeking a political solution since the crisis began in Syria,” he said, adding, “We believe that the security crisis that has been created in Iraq has been influenced by the crisis in Syria.
A secure Iraq will benefit Iran
Larijani also said, “The more stability, calm and unity in Iraq the better it is for us (Iran).”
The senior Iranian lawmaker went on to say that “thanks God you have made good progresses but terrorist actions (in Iraq) have caused some concerns.”
“The stability and progress of Iraq is very important for us. Due to this reason we have increased our economic cooperation with Iraq,” Larijani said.
“The progress of Iraq is dependent on national unity and we hope that this cohesion will be increased.”
