TEHRAN – Abbas Araqchi, the Iranian deputy foreign minister and lead nuclear negotiator, held separate meeting on Tuesday in Geneva with U.S. Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman who leads her country’s team in negotiations with Iran.
The meeting between Araqchi and Sherman came after the first day of nuclear talks between Iran and the negotiating partners (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany known as the 5+1 group) ended on Tuesday afternoon.
Negotiations between Iran and the six major powers started on Tuesday and will continue until Wednesday. The Iranian negotiating team is headed by Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and the 5+1 group is led by Catherine Ashton, the European Union’s chief diplomat.
It was the first official meeting between Iran and the 5+1 group since Hassan Rouhani took office as the Iranian president in August.
In the morning session Iran’s foreign minister outlined a new proposal to resolve the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program.
Michael Mann, a spokesman for Ashton, said the Iranian proposal had been “very useful.”
