|Majlis to order expansion of nuclear activities if necessary: Larijani||
TEHRAN – The Majlis will ratify laws calling for the expansion of nuclear activities if deemed necessary, Iranian parliament speaker Ali Larijani said on Sunday.
“It is necessary that general rules about Iran’s nuclear case be observed. Iran is a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and has joined the NPT (nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty). No specific regulations should be adopted in regard to Iran. Observation of these (general) rules is the basis for talks. Negotiators should pay attention to this issue, and if the Majlis feels the need, it will ratify the necessary laws regarding the expansion and diversification of nuclear activities,” Larijani said at an open session of the parliament on Sunday.
He was referring to the negotiations that Iran’s new nuclear negotiating team has started with world powers to resolve the dispute over the country’s nuclear program.
Majlis should decide on additional protocol
In addition, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who is also a nuclear negotiator, said on Saturday that the decision about the ratification of an additional protocol on wider inspections of the country’s nuclear facilities rests with the parliament.
“Making a decision about the additional protocol lies with the respected Majlis and we have told this to the other side. They consider it a great confidence-building step. However, if the Majlis plans to make a decision (to ratify it), it would not be possible under the current circumstances and it may do this during the final stages if it feels that the necessary steps have been taken and national interests will be served,” Araqchi said in a televised interview broadcast live on Iranian television.
