|Iran to launch UO2 production line in three months: nuclear chief||
TEHRAN – The director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran announced on Tuesday that the production line of enriched UO2 (uranium dioxide) will be launched within three months.
AEOI Director Ali Akbar Salehi also said that enriched UO2 would be used to provide nuclear fuel for the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
UO2 is a black, radioactive, and crystalline powder that naturally occurs in the mineral uraninite. It is used in nuclear fuel rods in nuclear reactors.
The first unit of the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear power plant was temporarily handed over to Iranian experts on September 23 during a ceremony which was attended by AEOI officials and a number of Russian experts.
Salehi said at the time that during the temporary handover, the Bushehr nuclear power plant must operate for two years or 7,000 hours under the Russian side’s warranty. “After these two years, the plant, which is currently being operated by Iranians, will be fully under our control.”
