TEHRAN – The deputy interior minister announced on Saturday that 14 Iranian border guards were killed and six injured in a terrorist attack carried out by armed men on a border post near the country’s frontier with Pakistan on Friday night.
Ali Abdollahi also said that in the ambush attack, which took place near the city of Saravan in the southeastern Iranian province of Sistan and Baluchestan, the armed men took three border guards hostage.
He said it seemed that the attack had been organized from outside the country, adding that the Interior Ministry and the Foreign Ministry were pursuing the case.
Efforts are being made to obtain the release of the hostages, he said.
He also pointed to the security agreement between Iran and Pakistan and urged Islamabad to take more serious measures to control the country’s border areas and deal with terrorists.
According to ISNA, a provincial official also said, “The attackers, who saw that conditions were unsafe for their actions, retreated to the country opposite (Pakistan) after the clash.”
President Hassan Rouhani and Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani issued separate messages on Saturday offering their condolences over the incident.
An Iranian prosecutor also announced that 16 terrorists affiliated with counter-revolutionary groups were executed in Sistan and Baluchestan Province on Saturday morning in response to the terrorist attack.
