|Iranian forces kill eight drug smugglers in Kerman Province||
TEHRAN - Iranian forces have killed eight drug smugglers in a shootout near the city of Baft in Kerman Province, Kerman Public Prosecutor Mohammad Mohaqeq announced on Tuesday.
Over a ton of narcotics and some weapons, including RPGs and grenades, were confiscated, Mohaqeq stated.
The clash happened on Monday night after officers identified a convoy of armed bandits and drug traffickers in Baft.
The prosecutor said the bandit group had been smuggling large consignments of drugs from eastern borders to central provinces over the past years after passing through the border province of Sistan and Baluchestan.
Iran lies on a major trafficking route from Afghanistan to Europe and Persian Gulf states.
