TEHRAN – On the third leg of his tour of the Persian Gulf Arab states Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif landed in Qatar on Monday where he reiterated Tehran’s position that Iran prioritizes friendly relations with neighboring countries.
“The priority of the Islamic Republic of Iran is having friendly relations with neighboring countries and my trip to the region is meant to convey our message of friendship,” Zarif said in his meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in Doha.
He added that the security, prosperity and the development of the region are integrated and that the regional countries are linked by a shared destiny.
“The two countries should rely on their shared aims and stand by each other in order to avoid disagreements from arising,” he added.
The Qatari emir, for his part, described the agreement between Iran and the six major powers on its nuclear program as a great achievement and said that Doha is keen to see Iran as an influential power in the region.
Sheikh Tamim also said that having close relations with Iran serves the interests of Qatar and underscored that no differences of opinion should come as an obstacle preventing the expansion of ties.
Zarif also held a meeting with his Qatari counterpart Khalid bin Mohammad al-Attiyah and discussed various political and economic issues.
The two officials called for more cooperation between the two countries in different spheres.
‘Iran, Saudi Arabia should work toward achieving stability’
Before his departure from Oman on Monday, Zarif told AFP that Iran and Saudi Arabia should work together toward achieving regional “stability”.
“I believe that our relations with Saudi Arabia should expand as we consider Saudi Arabia as an extremely important country in the region and the Islamic world,” Zarif said.
“We believe that Iran and Saudi Arabia should work together in order to promote peace and stability in the region.”
“I am ready to go to Saudi Arabia, but it is just a matter of being able to arrange a mutually convenient time. I will visit it soon inshallah (God willing).”
