|Extremists disappointed by Syria joining Chemical Weapons Convention: Iran||
TEHRAN – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has hailed the “appropriate” decision by the Syrian government to join the Chemical Weapons Convention, saying the decision left extremists disappointed.
He made the remarks during a meeting on Tuesday with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad on the sidelines of the 18th Conference of the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention in The Hague, which opened on Monday and closes on Friday
In September, Syria agreed to have its chemical weapons eliminated, in efforts to avert U.S. threats to carry out military strikes against Damascus.
Mekdad, for his part, praised Iran for its support and technical advice to help Syria meet its commitments on implementing the provisions of the convention.
He added that despite all security and economic problems that Syria is facing, the Bashar Assad government will not spare any effort to fulfill its commitments to eliminate its stockpile of chemical weapons.
