|Iran deal is a good first step: Hagel||
TEHRAN – U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on Thursday spoke by phone with United Arab Emirates Crown Prince Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahayan on his flight to Bahrain, the Kuwait News Agency reported.
Hagel “underscored the U.S. commitment to the security of the United Arab Emirates and its allies and partners in the (Persian) Gulf,” according to a Pentagon statement.
Hagel and the UAE crown prince discussed Iran and Syria and “agreed to continue to cooperate closely on these and other mutual interests over the next several months.”
He also noted that the joint action plan recently clinched by the six major powers and Iran is “a first, good step”.
Iran and the six major powers reached a historic deal on November 24, according to which Tehran will offer some concessions in exchange for limited relief from the sanctions imposed on the country.
U.S. President Barack Obama also on Thursday defended his nuclear diplomacy with Iran before an audience of Israeli diplomats and members of the U.S. Jewish community and officials, AFP reported.
