Masoumeh Ebtekar made the remarks in a ceremony arranged to establish an international research and development center on controlling emissions. The Austrian ambassador to Tehran was also present in the ceremony which was held at the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University.

“This center can be an important step in reducing air pollution in metropolises, especially Tehran,” she noted.

She also said experts from Austria will work with this center “because environment is not a local or national issue rather it is a global issue.”

Ebtekar went on to say that the ministries of industries and oil should cooperate with this research center.  She added the center will also establish extensive cooperation with foreign based research centers.

The chairwoman said clean air entails a development in auto sector, international standards, and applied research.

The more research and supervision is done, the more it will help to “improve air quality” which in effect would help sustainable development in the country.
