|Iran, China seek to increase strategic political and economic cooperation||
TEHRAN – Iranian Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Shamkhani held a meeting with Yang Jiechi, a senior member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, in Tehran on Sunday, in which the two officials called for increased strategic cooperation between Iran and China in political and economic spheres.
Shamkhani pointed to the important position of Iran in the Middle East region and that of China in East Asia and said that the constructive model of cooperation between Tehran and Beijing was a symbol of cooperation between Asian countries which had been formed based on an independent political will.
He also said that significant changes which had occurred in regional and international equations as a result of the will of and the resistance put up by the Iranian people had shifted the balance of power in favor of independent countries.
In addition, Shamkhani said that the economic reforms undertaken by China and Iran’s new political approach in the international arena would create effective synergy to increase potential for the expansion of cooperation between the two countries.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian official thanked China for adopting a positive approach toward Iran’s nuclear issue and opposing unilateral sanctions against the Islamic Republic and called on Beijing to play a more effective role to help resolve the issue.
For his part, the Chinese official said that progress in the process of talks between Tehran and world powers over the country’s nuclear program helped promote the stability and security of the region and the world.
Yang also described the economic ties between the two countries as strategic and said that economic cooperation could be complemented by cooperation on cultural affairs, security-related issues, and counter-terrorism efforts.
He added that Iran and China could work together to help promote peace and stability in Afghanistan and Syria.
Yang also held a meeting with Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on the same day.
