|Iranian president congratulates Pope on Christmas||
TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani sent a message to Pope Francis on Wednesday, congratulating him and all Catholics around the world on the anniversary of the birth of Jesus.
“I hope you will be successful in your capacity as Pope in promoting peace, alleviating poverty, and guiding the world - which is filled with violence, discrimination, and extremism - to peace, justice, and moderation,” Rouhani wrote in his message.
“What makes me hopeful about your success in taking steps toward the realization of peace, freedom, and justice is your long-held belief in the necessity of dialogue among religions,” the president noted.
Rouhani also hailed the Pope’s efforts to deal with the problems facing the world with a new attitude.
Rouhani issued a separate message on the same day congratulating all Christians on the occasion.
Iranian Judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani also congratulated Christians on the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ and said Jesus Christ’s message is filled with peace, justice, and spirituality.
He also asked, “If Jesus Christ lived today, would he prescribe that Iran be subject to 30 years of sanctions” just because it did not follow the West?
