Unlike this view that Saudi Arabia is “one wing of the Islamic world” this country along with Israel “is moving against the interests of the Islamic world like two wings,” Seyyed Mohammad Sadeq Kharrazi, Iran’s former ambassador to France, told a meeting on “the Geneva deal and its regional and extra-regional political effects”.
All moves show that Saudi Arabia and Israel are taking steps against peace and security in the Middle East region, Kharrazi said.
He said Saudi Arabia’s policies in the region over the last three decades have ended in failure, starting from its support for Saddam Hussein, al-Qaeda, and training terrorists and sending them to Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The former diplomat also said Saudi Arabia is facing a kind of “serious crisis” at home and it has caused Riyadh to take contradictory approaches in its foreign policy and this country has lost its previous status in the world.
He said Iran and Saudi Arabia could establish a close cooperation to the benefit of the Islamic world but “Saudi Arabia’s support for terrorism, extremism and radicalism in the world of Islam, especially in Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan,” has killed efforts for a joint cooperation.
He also said Iran and the United States share common interests in the fight against terrorism in Iraq but currently the nuclear dispute is the only issue that Iran and the U.S. are talking about.
