|Iran standing by Iraq in campaign against terrorism: Zarif||
TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday that Iran will stand by the Iraqi people in their campaign against extremism and terrorism.
He made the remarks at a press conference after a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Hoshyar Zebari in Baghdad on the second leg of his tour to regional countries.
Zarif added that extremism, sectarianism, and terrorism are serious threat to the region and expressed hope that the upcoming Geneva conference on Syria, slated for January 22, would introduce proper measures to combat terrorism and putting an end to conflicts in the region.
Zebari, for his part, said that a possible Iran’s participation in the Geneva conference II can be helpful in finding a solution to the Syrian people’s troubles.
Zarif also held separate meetings with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, and Usama al-Nujayfi, the speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.
Zarif left Baghdad for Amman, Jordan, on Tuesday and was scheduled to hold meetings with the Jordanian king and foreign minister.
Zarif had visited Lebanon on Monday.
