|Iran prioritizes ties with Muslim nations: Rouhani||
TEHRAN – A promotion of relations with Muslim countries, including the neighboring states, is a high priority for Iran, President Hassan Rouhani said during a meeting with Iyad bin Amin Madani, the new secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, in Tehran on Wednesday.
“The Muslim world has high expectations from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and we should all make efforts and join hands to fulfill these expectations,” Rouhani said.
“It is the main duty of the OIC to protect the lives of Muslims and prevent atrocities against them,” he added
Iyad, for his part, said the organization needs Iran’s support to settle the disputes in the Muslim world.
Mr. Iyad also held a joint press conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on the same day in which he said the OIC believes that the Syrian crisis should only be solved by the people of Syria.
He also expressed hope that the Geneva II conference, aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the Syrian crisis, would introduce ways out of the turmoil.
The opposing sides in Syria’s civil war wrapped up the first round of peace talks at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva on Friday with no agreement.
The delegates are expected to meet again around February 10.
