TEHRAN – After dispatching warships to the Atlantic Ocean, Iran has now offered Russia a proposal to carry out joint naval exercises in May, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials, the WND news website reported on Friday.
The officials told WND that Moscow is considering the proposal but that there was no immediate decision from Russia.
The officials said the proposal was likely a response to reports of U.S. vessels in the Persian Gulf.
There have been reports that the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman has deliberately spent time outside the Persian Gulf as a gesture to Iran while the West attempts to implement its interim nuclear agreement with Tehran.
Last week, the Fars News Agency quoted Admiral Afshin Rezaei Haddad as saying that a number of Iranian warships had been ordered to approach U.S. maritime borders as a response to the stationing of U.S. vessels in the Persian Gulf.
The fleet consists of a destroyer and a helicopter-carrying supply ship.
