|Iran supports peace efforts in Syria: Rouhani||
TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has reiterated that the Islamic Republic will support efforts meant to establish peace and stability in Syria and hold a free election in the crisis-hit Arab country.
Rouhani made the remarks during a meeting with the Syrian parliament speaker, Mohammad Jihad al-Laham, in Tehran on Wednesday.
“It is important to Iran that Syria will restore stability and make the preparations necessary to hold an election as soon as possible,” Rouhani said, adding, “Iran will support (the process of holding) a free election.”
He also expressed hope that Syria will achieve further success on the political scene.
Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian president said that the Islamic Republic is serious in its campaign against terrorism and its efforts to promote the peace and stability of the region.
For his part, the Syrian official said that hands are at work to increase problems in order not to allow the presidential election to be held in Syria at the planned time.
Iranian people long for liberation of al-Quds
In a separate meeting with the chairman of the Palestinian National Council, Salim Zanoun, on Wednesday, Rouhani said that the Iranian people long to see the liberation of al-Quds (Jerusalem).
He also expressed regret over the fact that the Palestinian territories are still under occupation and expressed hope that the Muslim world will find a solution to end the occupation of Palestine.
For his part, Zanoun asked Iran to play a more active role to help resolve the Palestinian issue.
