Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani made the remarks during the council’s first session in Iran’s New Year which was attended by heads of the three branches of government and most council members.

Referring to the nuclear talks between Iran and the 5+1 group (the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council plus Germany), he said that Iran defends its legitimate rights during the negotiations.

Iran is seeking a solution to its nuclear issue through dialogue and interaction, he added.

The veteran politician went on to say that achieving a favorable result in nuclear talks requires national determination and people and officials’ help.

Iran and the 5+1 group held their last round of talks in Vienna on Tuesday and Wednesday. They agreed to meet again on May 13 in Vienna to work on a final solution to the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program.
