|A free election will help restore stability in Syria: Larijani||
TEHRAN – Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani says that holding a free election in Syria will help restore calm and stability in the crisis-hit Arab country.
“Holding a free election and respecting the Syrian people’s votes will be an important step to restore calm and stability in the country,” Larijani said during a meeting with Cuban Ambassador to Iran Vladimir Andres Gonzalez Quesada in Tehran on Tuesday.
Commenting on the relationship between Tehran and Havana, the parliament speaker said that political relations between the two countries have always been at a high level, adding that economic cooperation should be increased to be on a par with political relations.
Ambassador Gonzalez also said that the two countries should try to take advantage of close political relations to increase their economic, cultural, and parliamentary relations.
On the Syrian crisis, he said that Havana is opposed to any foreign intervention in Syria.
Syrian Parliament Speaker Mohamed Jihad al-Laham announced on Monday that Syria will hold a presidential election on June 3, according to Reuters.
Syria is facing a three-year-old conflict between President Bashar al-Assad’s forces and anti-government rebel groups that has killed more than 150,000 people and forced millions from their homes.
