In an interview with an Iranian state television channel on Thursday, Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said Saudi Arabia is an important country in the region that plays a significant role in the Islamic world.
He further noted that Iran together with Saudi Arabia can help Muslim countries to achieve greater progress.
Amir-Abdollahian also stated that the government of Hassan Rouhani favors enhancement of relations with Riyadh, adding that Iran’s foreign policy is based on engaging in dialogue with other countries.
He went on to say that Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal has sent an invitation to his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif to pay a visit to Riyadh, though such a visit requires some preparation in advance, he noted.
Iran and Saudi Arabia have been supporting the opposite sides in the Syrian conflict. Iran has been backing the government of Beshar al-Assad and Saudi Arabia has been supporting the rebels.
Iran and Saudi Arabia also back rival factions in Lebanon.
