The statement was signed by 230 parliamentarians.

Syria held presidential election on June 3 in which the incumbent leader Bashar al-Assad won 88.7 percent of the votes.

Syria's constitutional court said that the turnout and an earlier round of voting for Syrian expatriates stood at 73 percent.

In their statement the MPs stated that the Syrians neutralized plots by the U.S. and its allies through their massive participation in the election and voting overwhelmingly for Assad.

The presidential election demonstrated the political power of the Syrian government and people in confronting the U.S. and its allies, the statement added.

The election also showed that the conflict in Syria can only be resolved through a political dialogue which will be based on the Syrian people’s will, the MPs wrote.

The statement added that after more than three years of war in Syria, which left thousands of people dead, the U.S. and its allies should be held accountable for waging war in the country.

The Syria crisis, which began in 2011, pits President Assad’s forces against anti-government militants and foreign terrorists. Over 162,000 people have been killed in the fighting, and millions have been forced to flee from their homes.

The MPs also congratulated the Syrian people and government on Assad’s victory in the election and expressed hope that this important political development would put an end to the war in the country.

The statement also called on the Iranian government to help establish peace in the region and intensify efforts in the fight against terrorism.
