At a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva on Monday, Fazli also said actions should be taken by the international community to encourage the refugees to return to their home country voluntarily.

An international support for resolving the problems facing refugees and displaced peoples is necessary, the Iranian minister said, adding that the return of Afghan refugees to their country should be the first priority.

To help the Afghan refugees return home it is necessary that the international community be cooperative to help improve the situation in the war-torn Afghanistan, he stated.

Iran is an active member of the 1951 Convention and has had close cooperation with the UN high commissioner for refugees.

The 1951 Convention, drawn up by the UN high commissioner for refugees, is related to the status of refugees and is the key legal document in defining who is a refugee, their rights and the legal obligations of states.
