|Syrians showed they favor peaceful settlement of crisis: Iranian VP||
TEHRAN – Iranian First Vice President Es’haq Jahangiri has said that the Syrian people showed that they favor the peaceful settlement of the crisis which has gripped their country for over three years through participating in the recent presidential election.
Bashar al-Assad was reelected as the Syrian president in the election which was held in early June.
Jahangiri made the remarks in a telephone conversation with Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi on Monday on the occasion of the holy month of Ramadan.
“The message of the Syrian people in the presidential election was that they will not allow violent groups and extremists to affect their will,” he said.
He also expressed hope that the Syrian people and government would be able to take effective measures to reconstruct their country and boost popular participation.
Elsewhere in his remarks, Jahangiri pointed to good cooperation between Tehran and Damascus and said that the Islamic Republic will continue sending humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.
The Syrian prime minister, for his part, thanked the Islamic Republic for its policy on the Syria crisis and its support for the recent presidential election in the Arab country.
He also said that positive developments are taking place in Syria which will help achieve national reconciliation in the country.
