|Ashton to continue Iran talks role until November deadline: WSJ||
TEHRAN – European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton is expected to stay on as chair of the six-nation group that negotiates with Iran on its nuclear program until the deadline for negotiations ends in late November, the Wall Street Journal quoted a senior western diplomat as saying on Saturday.
On Friday, Iran and the six powers agreed to extend the deadline for talks from July 20 until November 24.
Ashton is due to step down as the EU’s foreign policy chief at the end of October.
However the diplomat said Ashton is expected to stay in her role if the nuclear talks continue up to the deadline.
The official said there was agreement that it would be disruptive for the power group’s chief negotiator to change in the final weeks of negotiations.
“The clear understanding among the countries is that she will complete the job,” the official said.
