TEHRAN – The Iranian ambassador to Lebanon has announced Tehran’s full support for the government, people, and the resilient army of Lebanon.
In a message to Jean Kahwaji, the chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces, Ambassador Mohammad Fathali condemned the recent deadly incident in the Lebanese border town of Arsal, saying the onslaught signifies a dangerous conspiracy targeting Lebanon’s cohesion and territorial integrity.
According to the Lebanese army, 14 soldiers had been killed, with 22 others missing and 86 injured in the fighting which erupted after security forces arrested a Syrian extremist rebel commander, Emad Jumaa, on Saturday.
Fathali added that the actions carried out by terrorist groups, who kill innocent people in the name of Islam, show that they do not have a clue of the true Islam.
Also Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham issued a statement, expressing sympathy with the Lebanese government and nation as well as the bereaved families of the victims of the incident.
In her message, Afkham expressed hope that the Arab country would weather the current crisis through unity among all political groups.
She added that fighting the sinister phenomenon of terrorism and its backers require regional and international cooperation.
Soldiers advancing into Arsal found the bodies of 50 militants, a Lebanese security official said.
