Mehrabad Airport is located inside Tehran’s city limits and is Iran’s busiest airport.
Last week, an Iranian airplane crashed into a residential block, moments after takeoff from Mehrabad, killing 40 people on board. Many more people probably would have been killed if the plane had crashed just a few dozen meters away.
Airports located in cities cause several types of problems, such as air and noise pollution and the threat of plane crashes in residential areas, Qalibaf said last week, adding that the Tehran Municipality has been working on the project to move the airport outside of the city for more than a year, the Fars News Agency reported on Friday.
