He made the remarks during a meeting with Ayatollah Hafiz Syed Riaz Hussain Najafi, the Pakistani principal of Hawza Elmiye Jamia-tul-Muntazar in Lahore in Tehran on Thursday.

Rafsanjani said under the current situation unity among Muslims is a “political” and logical” necessity.

In an atmosphere in which Muslims are falsely portrayed as “inherently violent”, some are fueling sectarianism, he added.

He pointed to historical background of the Pakistani people, saying that the Pakistani Muslims are committed to their religion in spite of all the anti-religion propaganda.

Ayatollah Hafiz Syed Riaz Hussain Najafi expressed hope that more actions would be taken to boost unity among Muslims and prevent division among them.
