|Iran praises political transformation in Iraq||
TEHRAN – On Friday, a top Iranian security official issued a message praising the trend of political transformation in Iraq.
Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, called the move a sign of “political maturity” which will also help foster unity among the rival Iraqi leaders and political groups.
The statement by Shamkhani came after Iraqi leader Nouri al-Maliki officially stepped aside as prime minister on Thursday, clearing the way for prime minister-designate Haider al-Abadi.
Undoubtedly, Shamkhani said, the Iraqi leaders will form an “efficient government” and “restore security and stability” in the country through such a wise political move.
Shamkhani said “solidarity” among the Iraqi people and political groups is an important step in the fight against “despotism, terrorism and foreign dominance”.
The Iranian security official said a “bright prospect” awaits Iraq.
Maliki stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Haider al-Abadi in an appearance on state television. Maliki announced that he will back the efforts of his “brother” in forming a government for the sake of Iraq’s unity.
Maliki’s earlier refusal to resign had been blamed for deepening the crisis. The UN has welcomed his resignation.
