|Strong quake hits Ilam Province, over 250 injured||
TEHRAN - A strong earthquake hit Ilam Province in western Iran early on Monday, injuring over 250 people, IRNA reported.
The 6.2-magnitude earthquake hit at a depth of around 10 kilometers (6 miles) in an area 36 kilometers southeast of Abdanan in Ilam Province.
The quake which happened at 7:02 a.m. local time was followed by a series of aftershocks.
The quake cut off water, electricity and phone lines in the city of Abdanan.
Majid Asgari, a local official at Abdanan, said the quake inflicted damages on 2,700 houses which about 1000 of them were in rural areas.
The quake also affected the neighboring provinces of Lorestan and Khuzestan, IRNA reported.
The epicenter of the quake was three kilometers away from Mourmori town and 41 kilometers away from Dehloran.
Hossein Darakhshan, a Red Cross official, said rescuers are busy constructing a residential camp in the sports stadium of Mourmori for people. He said the camp would be ready by late Monday.
Darakhshan told IRNA that people refuse to go back to their homes, fearing more quakes.
Ilam Province governor Mohammad Reza Morvarid said eight villages in the vicinity of Mourmori have been damaged to a great extent.
Morvarid said infrastructure projects such as oil and electricity facilities and roads in these villages have been greatly damaged.
He also said initial estimates show that houses in these villages have been destroyed by up to 50 percent.
