Parviz Khaki was arrested in the Philippines 27 months ago upon a baseless accusation made by the U.S. against him, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said in a statement on Wednesday.

The United States had requested the government of the Philippines to extradite Khaki, but could not push it through as the Iranian Embassy in Manila filed a petition opposing his extradition.

According to the media, the detainee lost his life due to the prison’s poor condition and some other unknown reasons.
