TEHRAN –
The Chairman of Iran’s Expediency Council has said that certain Western countries are seeking to find “political excuses” in the course of negotiations with Iran over its nuclear energy program.

Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani made the remarks during a meeting with visiting Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja in Tehran on Sunday.

The imposition of new sanctions against Iran shows the United States’ “confusion” regarding its foreign policy, particularly over its dealing with the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Rafsanjani said.

He added that the fresh sanctions ahead of the new round of negotiations with the world powers will create a “negative atmosphere” in the country.

The former president went on to say that if the West seeks to build mutual trust, it ought to lift all sanctions against the country.
