TEHRAN - Mehdi Chamran has been elected as chairman of Tehran City Council.
Chamran, a principlist politician, was elected as chairman by winning 18 out of 31 votes during a closed session on Tuesday.
Chamran succeeded Ahmad Masjed-Jamei, a pro-reform politician, who held the post during the past year.
Masjed-Jamei gained 13 votes and failed to be reelected.
Morteza Talaie was reelected as the deputy chairman of the council by receiving 17 votes.
In the first council elections reformists won all the seats in Tehran. However, in the second and third council elections, in which conservatives grabbed the majority of the seats, Chamran, an architect, was the chairman.
