TEHRAN - Iran on Tuesday unveiled two new domestically manufactured radar systems named Keyhan and Arash 2 with the capability to intercept fighter jets and stealth aircrafts.
“The Keyhan radar system is a two-dimensional radar system with the capability of discovering the distance, angle, direction, and radial velocity of the targets,” the commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base said on Tuesday, Fars News Agency reported.
“It also has the capability of detecting and intercepting conventional airplanes, stealth flying objects, high-altitude bombers, and cargo aircrafts,” Brigadier General Farzad Esmaeili added.
“Arash 2 is a two-dimensional solid-state radar which can cover 360 degrees and monitor and track targets over 100,000 feet in altitude,” he explained.
Esmaeili also announced on Monday that Iran is due to unveil and launch several new hi-tech radar and air defense systems by the end of the current Iranian calendar year (by March 21, 2015), with various capabilities, including track and identification of small flying objects.
Iranian officials have always stressed that the country’s military and arms programs serve defensive purposes and should not be perceived as a threat to any other country.
