TEHRAN - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast has advised the British government to refrain from using violence against protesters who express their demands through peaceful means.
On January 30, hundreds of thousands of public sector workers and teachers in Britain took part in a one-day strike, protesting against proposed changes to their pensions, CBC reported.
Reportedly the protesters clashed with police and a number of demonstrators were arrested.
According to Australia’s ABC network, the British government wants to reduce entitlements and increase the eligible age as part of wider spending cuts designed to slash government debt and reduce the budget deficit.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Mehmanparast said, “We call on the British government to respect the rights of those arrested and to refrain from taking any violent action when dealing with peaceful protests.”
