TEHRAN -- New acting Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Orabi has said that Tehran-Cairo relations will not harm the interests of the littoral Arab states in the Persian Gulf region, ISNA reported.
Al-Orabi made the remarks during a recent interview with Kuwaiti newspaper al-Rai al-Aam. His comments were later translated into English.
The security in the Persian Gulf region is one of Egypt’s priorities, and the Egyptians are paying due attention to this issue, al-Orabi stated.
He added that the enhancement of relations between Cairo and Tehran will not threaten the interests of Arab states bordering the Persian Gulf.
He also said that his statements are in accord with the remarks that former Egyptian foreign minister Nabil al-Arabi had made about relations between Egypt and the Islamic Republic.
After President Hosni Mubarak was forced to step down on February 11, Al-Arabi made overtures to the Iranian government and called for the normalization of diplomatic ties with Iran, saying Cairo is determined to reestablish relations with Tehran.
Iranian officials have welcomed Egypt’s new approach toward Tehran.
The Islamic Republic of Iran cut diplomatic ties with Egypt in 1979 because Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel and offered asylum to former Iranian dictator Mohammad Reza Pahlavi after he was deposed.
