TEHRAN -- Iranian Intelligence Minister Heydar Moslehi on Wednesday described the recent threats made by U.S. Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta as “empty”.

According to the Associated Press, Panetta said in Iraq on Monday that the U.S. will not “walk away” from the challenge of Iran’s stepped-up arming of Iraqi insurgents who are targeting and killing American troops as they prepare to leave Iraq.

Speaking to reporters, Moslehi said, “It has been 32 years that U.S. officials are uttering such threats, and they themselves are aware that such threats will get them nowhere.”

“Whenever they fail to respond to public opinion in various spheres, they make such threats and moves,” he added.

U.S. defense secretary’s remarks rooted in Washington’s defeat

Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi also said on Wednesday that U.S. hegemony has come to an end, and Panetta’s remarks are rooted in the political defeat that Washington has suffered.

Vahidi made the remarks during a speech at the closing ceremony of the first Strategic Navy Conference, which was held in Tehran from July 11-13.

The Iranian minister also said that U.S. officials are making such remarks with the aim of diverting attention from the realities on the ground.

A number of other U.S. officials including former defense secretary Robert Gates, and U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mike Mullen have also accused Iran of supplying Iraqi militia with weapons.
