| Efforts to obtain war reparations from Iraq underway: official |

 Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast says the Iranian government is pursuing the case of obtaining reparations from Iraq. “Seeking war reparations from Iraq for damages inflicted on Iran during the war imposed by Saddam’s regime is on the agenda of our talks with Iraqi officials,” Mehmanparast told Mehr News Agency in an interview published on Sunday. “We will pursue the issue considering the situation of the region and the degree of the Iraqi government’s control of the country’s affairs,” he added. In August, the Iranian parliament announced that it was drafting a plan to obtain war reparations from Iraq. At the time, MP Eivaz Heidarpour said that Iraq inflicted a $1 trillion loss on Iran during the 1980-1988 war. Heidarpour said if Iraq wants to pay reparations, it would have to give Iran one million barrels of oil per day, at $70 per barrel, for 50 years to at least compensate for the financial losses it imposed on the country. However, the issue slipped into oblivion for months until it was reported on Thursday that the United Nations has released $1.06 billion in Iraqi compensation to Kuwait in the latest payment of a war reparation scheme that began in 1994, prompting Iranian reporters to again follow up on the issue.
