TEHRAN - Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ramin Mehmanparast on Saturday dismissed the recent remarks by French President Nicolas Sarkozy about the nature of Iran's nuclear program. Sarkozy said on Friday that time was running out to avoid a military intervention in Iran and appealed to China and Russia to support new sanctions to force Tehran to negotiate over its uranium enrichment program, according to Reuters. Mehmanparast said that Sarkozy's remarks are not based on the realities on the ground, adding, "It seems that the French president is seeking to find a pretext to exert pressure on the Iranian nation through the imposition of illegal and unjust sanctions on the Iranian nation by making false claims, but it must be noted that such efforts are known to and rejected by the world's people." "The Islamic Republic of Iran avoids pointless political arguments and believes that understanding could be achieved only through serious negotiations based on negotiation and cooperative approach and not through a wrong pathand sanctions. However, it seems that Mr. Sarkozy is seeking other ways than peace and lasting stability based on justice in the sensitive regions of the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, but they will definitely get nowhere," he added.
