TEHRAN – The deputy director of the Renovation Organization of Iranian schools has announced that first steps have been taken to remove fuel oil heaters from the village schools across the country.

Following the unfortunate fire accidents which occurred at a few village schools in the past few years the parliament has allocated 2.6 trillion rials (about $105 million) budget to improve the heating systems in schools that operated on unsafe heaters, Morteza Raeisi told the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency in an interview published on Tuesday.

In one incident, in Safilan village in January 2005 in the mountains of Chaharmahal Bakhtiari Province, a malfunctioning heater in a school ignited a barrel of kerosene and touched off a blaze that killed 13 children and injured 18 other students.

In another incident in December 2012 in Enghelab elementary girl school in Shinabad, one of the Piranshahr environs in West Azarbaijan Province, fire broke out due to explosion in a traditional heater and about 40 students were either severely burnt or killed.

Raeisi added so far 15,000 radiant heaters have been purchased and the aim is to get all fuel oil heaters out of schools.

He went on to say that all radiant heaters will be installed high on classrooms walls and out of students’ reach so that the new heaters will no longer pose any threat to students.

Raeisi said radiant heaters are eco-friendly and prevent air pollution and save fossil fuels.
