TEHRAN – From next week only “clean gasoline” will be supplied to gas stations in Tehran, the director of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) announced on Sunday.
Mostafa Kashkouli said currently eight million liters of clean gasoline is supplied to gas stations in Tehran which accounts for 70 percent of petrol consumption in the metropolitan city, IRNA reported.
However, from next week only clean gasoline is sold at gas stations in the capital, Kashkouli added.
He also said currently clean gasoline is supplied in the cities of Arak and Karaj.
Air pollution in big cities, especially Tehran, poses a serious health problem for citizens and it has come as a headache for officials at the Department of Environment which is headed by Masoumeh Ebtekar.
The low quality of gasoline coupled with its low price, old and fuel-inefficient cars and heavy traffic have exacerbated the situation.
Sometimes air pollution has forced authorities to close elementary schools and kindergartens in Tehran province and enforce alternate-day driving restrictions for private vehicles based on plate numbers.
According to the Health Ministry, in 2012 air pollution contributed to nearly 4,500 premature deaths in Tehran alone.
On January 18, Tehran governor Hossein Hahsemi said the World Health Organization has officially announced that air pollution is a main cause of cancer.
Hashemi said more than 8,600 old taxis are plying the streets in Tehran which should be put out of service because they “put the lives of our children at risk”.
