TEHRAN – Naft of Tehran moved to the top of the Iran Professional League table after a 4-1 victory over Gostaresh Foolad on Sunday.
In the penultimate game of the season, Rasool Navidkia netted two goals in the 27th and 53rd minutes. Vouria Ghafouri scored from the penalty spot in the 35th minute and Ali Ghorbani was on target in the 78th minute.
With four minutes remaining, Fardin Abedini scored a consolation goal for the visiting team.
In Ahvaz, Foolad lost its must-win game to Esteghlal. Arash Borhani found the back of the net with a header in the 23rd minute.
Bakhtiar Rahmani from Foolad was sent off by referee Alireza Faghani in the 56th minute. Esteghlal midfielder Andranik Teymourian was also shown his yellow card in the 71st minute.
Persepolis could have moved ahead of Naft at the top of the table on goal difference after Foolad suffered a shock 1-0 defeat but was held to a 2-2 draw in Tehran’s Azadi Stadium.
Ali Alipoor opened the scoring for the visiting team in the 18th minute but Mohammad Abbaszadeh equalized the match two minutes later. Omid Alishah gave the Persepolis a lead in the 62nd minute but with one minute remaining Alireza Azimi scored for Rah Ahan.
In the other matches, Tractor Sazi defeated Esteghlal Sanati 1-0, Saipa was held to a goalless draw against struggling Fajr Sepasi, rock-bottom Mes drew 0-0 with Saba, Zob Ahan beat Damash 2-1 and Malavan was defeated by Sepahan 3-2.
With one week remaining, Naft is at the top with 54 points on goal difference. Foolad is second with 54 points, followed by Esteghlal and Persepolis with 53 and 52 points respectively.
