Zob Ahan declared Gandu the symbol of the club in order to save the reptile from extinction.
According to the Isfahan-based club, Gandu is a symbol of resistance.
Less than 500 of this species remain in Iran, with most restricted to southeastern Iran.
The Iranian national football team participated in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil wearing an image of an Asiatic cheetah on their uniforms in order to raise awareness about the Asiatic cheetah.
