|Iran volleyball team beats U.S. in four-match series||
Iran volleyball team defeated the U.S. 3-2 (24-26, 26-24, 25-27, 25-20, 15-9) in the USAV Cup matches at Viejas Arena at San Diego State on Saturday.
Iran’s Amir Ghafour led all scorers with 26 points and Carson Clark led the U.S. with 23 points.
“We defeated the U.S. but I am not satisfied because we won the match with our main team,” Iran coach Slobodan Kovac said.
The U.S. and Iran will play at the UC Irvine on Sunday.
“So far we’ve had three different teams in three matches,” U.S. head coach John Speraw said. “That’s what I was hoping for from this experience. I think we’ve demonstrated some nice depth.
“I wish we didn’t make so many errors from the service line. We had far too many service errors. We have to become more skilled,” he added.
The U.S., ranked No. 4 in the world, won the first two matches on Aug. 9 and 13. The USAV Cup matches are helping both teams prepare for the FIVB World Championship on Aug. 30-Sept. 21 in Poland.
Iran is in Pool D along with Italy, the U.S., France, Belgium and a representative from North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation.
The Iranian volleyball team will return to Tehran after the USAV Cup matches and continue its preparation.
The team is to leave the country at the end of August to take part in the world championship.
After the prestigious competitions, Slobodan Kovac’s men will move straight to Incheon, South Korea from Poland to participate in the 2014 Asian Games.
