TEHRAN -- The Iranian basketball team lost to 10-time champion China 66-48 on Thursday in the final of the 23rd FIBA Asia U18 Championship at the Gharafa Stadium in Doha, Qatar.

Iran had already qualified for the 2015 FIBA U-19 World Championship after defeating South Korea in the semifinals of the competitions.

Iran’s Navid Rezaeifar led the scoring with 13 points.

Zou Yuchen from China went on to finish with 14 points.

“We came in with a certain plan to win the gold. And I think we executed most of our plans well,” said China coach Fan Bin who won his second FIBA Asia U18 Championship gold in three editions.

“It’s very important for the boys to finish with the gold. That provides a lot of boost to their morale in the days to come,” he added.

“This team is a work in progress. We do expect them to serve China basketball in the future. But they still have a lot to learn,” he signed off.

South Korea also booked a place in the FIBA U-19 World Championship after beating Chinese Taipei 70-58.
