Iran basketball coach Mehmed Becirovic said that he is satisfied with the performance of his team in the 2014 FIBA World Cup opening match against Spain.

Iran lost host Spain 90-60 at the Palacio Municipal de Deportes de Granada.

Pau Gasol scored 33 points for Spain and Mehdi Kamrani led Iran with 18 points.

Becirovic told a news conference: "In this World Cup everyone expects a final between Spain and the United States. We played quite well but we were up against a side that was too strong."

"I must acknowledge that we are still a few steps behind the biggest teams in our group, however I am satisfied with my boys’ performance against Spain. In my opinion, Spain is a great team.
“This is the toughest group in this World Cup,” added Becirovic.

Iran has been drawn in group A with Spain, Serbia, Brazil, Egypt and France.
Spain and Brazil are favorites to clinch the top two spots in the group, while Iran, France and Serbia will battle to survive, and get through to the knockout stages.
