|German Foreign Ministry appoints first Muslim spokeswoman||
A German woman of Palestinian origin has been appointed as the deputy spokeswoman of the German Foreign Ministry.
Sawsan Chebli is the first German Muslim to hold the post.
During a government press conference in Berlin on Tuesday, Chebli introduced herself and stated that she had officially begun her work as a deputy spokeswoman.
Chebli said that she has worked for 6 years in the German parliament (Bundestag) but she has little experience as a press spokeswoman. She stated that she was happy with her new post, saying, “I hope that someday… religion or ethnicity will be not in the foreground and will be perceived as normal.”
It is expected that Chebli will be the deputy spokeswoman of the German Foreign Ministry for four years.
