A military source told SANA on Sunday that an army unit foiled militant groups’ attempt to infiltrate into the safe areas in al-Ashrafiyeh in Aleppo city, killing and injuring a number of militants.

The source added that army units also eliminated a number of militants and destroyed their weapons and ammunition.

Syrian military forces have captured areas near the border with Lebanon, cutting supply lines for foreign-backed insurgents as the army tightens its grip northwest of the capital.

Syrian troops are approaching the mountain resort of al-Zabadani, which has been under militant control for two years, cutting it off from militant-held areas in the mountainous Qalamoun region, state TV said on Friday.

Syrian forces have systematically captured most of the militant-held towns along the mountainous frontier since launching an offensive in the region in November.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since March 2011. According to reports, Western powers and their regional allies - especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey - are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

ISIL crucifies 9 men in Aleppo

A jihadist group in Syria has publicly executed and crucified nine men, eight of them rebels fighting both President Bashar Assad's government and the jihadists, an activist group said Sunday.

The report comes amid fierce clashes on the outskirts of Damascus between the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS), which is spearheading a major offensive in Iraq, and rebels, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"ISIL executed eight men in Deir Hafer in the east of Aleppo province" Saturday because they belonged to rebel groups that had fought against the jihadists as well as Assad's forces, it said.

ISIL then "crucified them in the main square of the village, where their bodies will remain for three days," the Britain-based group said.

Also in Aleppo province, a ninth man was executed and crucified in Al-Bab town near the border with Turkey.
