Mirdamadi: Iran Wants to Alleviate European Fears Over Nuclear Program

Brussels -- The head of the National Security and Foreign Relations Committee in the Iranian Majlis, Dr Mohsen Mirdamadi, said Wednesday that he has invited Members of the European Parliament to visit Iranian nuclear sites to alleviate European concerns about Iran's nuclear program.

"Our nuclear program is solely a peaceful one. We have no other goals. We have invited an MEP delegation to visit our nuclear sites. We will try to alleviate concerns of our friends in Europe," Mirdamadi told a press conference in the European Parliament in Brussels Wednesday following the end of his visit to the EP.

Speaking at the same press conference, the chairman of the EP's Foreign Relations and Human Rights Committee, Elmar Brok described the outcome of the first visit of a delegation from the Iranian Majlis (Parliament) to the EP as "constructive".

He said the Majlis delegation held discussions with the Members of European Parliament on EU-Iran relations, the domestic situation in Iran and regional issues.

Brok said the Majlis delegation was paying a reciprocal visit to Brussels following the visit of an EP delegation to Tehran last year.

He said the EP plans to form a delegation (committee) on Iran in 2004 like it has with other countries to promote parliamentary ties between the two countries.

On his part, Mirdamadi described his discussions with MEPs, and EU and Belgian officials as "good and constructive". He noted that the EU-Iran negotiations on a trade and cooperation agreement as well as the political negotiations were "progressing in an acceptable matter."

Commenting on the issue of terrorism, Mirdamadi said Iran has been a victim of terrorism by Al-Qaeda and the Taliban regime.

He said Iran has arrested some members of Al-Qaeda and deported them to their countries of origin, including Europe.

Later, the Majlis delegation was received by the President of the European Parliament, Pat Cox.

Cox called on Iran to sign the Additional Protocol to the NPT.

Mirdamadi earlier met Belgian Foreign Minister Louis Michel and discussed the progress of bilateral EU-Belgian ties.

He is expected to meet EU Commissioner for external relations Chris Patten today afternoon.

The 5-member Majlis delegation arrived in Brussels on Monday for a 3-day visit.
