U.S. Proposed Road Map to Help Sharon Save Face: Al Watan
When Sharon was appointed prime minister, he promised his supporters that he would suppress the Intifada in less than 100 days, yet he has been unable to suppress the Palestinian resistance movement, al-Houri said, adding that Sharon has to admit to a humiliating defeat, unprecedented in the history of the Zionist regime.
He wrote that the Zionist prime minister has used every method to suppressing the Palestinians, such as detaining them, assassinating their leaders, and demolishing their houses, noting that all this has been in vain because nothing has been able to bring an end to the Intifada.
The road map was implemented in order to quell the Intifada, since it has damaged Israel's economy, had a significant impact on the Israeli tourism industry, and disrupted the immigration process and settlement building, forcing the Zionists to prepare to leave the occupied territories, al-Houri added.
Also, martyrdom-seeking operations have frightened the Zionists and advanced the cause of the Palestinians, he said.
Al-Houri wrote that Palestinians can easily circumvent the Zionist security measures in the occupied territories to challenge the Zionist regime's military machine.
However, the United States is trying to impose demands on the Palestinians, which have been dictated by the Zionists, in order to eliminate the leadership of the Palestinian Authority, he said.
Al-Houri wrote that experience has shown that the Zionist regime has never abided by international law and has always tried to divert attention from the realities on the ground in the occupied territories through the use of disinformation.
He went on to say that the continuing program to establish new settlements despite UN opposition is an obvious example.
Even after Israel and the Palestinian Authority agreed to a truce, the Zionist regime continued detaining Palestinians, assassinating their leaders, and carrying out brutal attacks on Palestinian cities, all of which indicates that Israel was duplicitous in its agreements with the Palestinians, al-Houri said.
He added that the road map is therefore a U.S. trap meant to suppress the Intifada and the resistance movement in order to secure the interests of the Zionist regime.
Al-Houri referred to analysts who have said that the road map will face the same fate as the previous treaties, conventions, and charters, and lamented the fact that the Palestinians will be the victims and will have to endure the relentless attacks of the Zionists.
